Delivering education in the Welsh language.

The Challenge

Due to increased demand for education in the Welsh language, Swansea Council procured a multi-disciplinary team, led by AECOM to deliver a new Welsh medium primary school on amenity space in the Clase area of Swansea. The site itself was a former housing site that had been demolished and was currently green amenity space. It was also urban in character with existing house in close proximity. The challenge for the design team was to deliver the school without significant loss of amenity space and also without impacting on the amenity of existing residents.

Our Role

We managed the preparation of a comprehensive planning application for the school that robust examined key planning considerations like the impact the delivery of the school may have on the safe running of the local highway, the amount of usable public open space in the local area and how noise and lighting of the scheme may impact residents. As part of the application suitable mitigation was agreed with the Planning Authority and key consultees, and the mitigation was accommodated into the school design to ensure that the school would represent sustainable development and placemaking in action. The swift grant of planning permission demonstrates the placemaking credentials of the scheme.

The Outcome

The school has since been constructed by contractor Kier and is now serving the local community as a key Welsh education asset and also an asset for the local community
