Re-use of an extensive listed building.

The Challenge

The client required a planning consultant to act alongside architects, engineers, and the contractor to manage the planning and listed building application process for the long terms restoration and re-use strategy. The overall complex (over 2 ha) had been subject to numerous additions over the past 100 years, and much of it was vacant. It was required to be brought up to the standards required for the provision of modern health services, but also to ensure that the value of the listed building was retained or enhanced.

Our Role

We acted as planning consultants to direct the planning process for the incremental works for the re-use of parts of the complex and provided heritage advice for individual schemes. We scoped, managed, and co-ordinated the planning and listed building applications including the provision of the planning statements and heritage impact assessments.

The Outcome

We secured some 25 planning and listed building consents from 2010 onwards. These works have now been implemented and these areas are again in active use. We are now leading the planning and heritage permission process for the site wide safeguarding and MEP strategy, and the proposed comprehensive re-use and new extensions and development as part of the South Cardiff Locality Hub.
